ESSAY

Media (New Media)

New media is a broad term that emerged in the later part of the 20th century to encompass the amalgamation of traditional media such as film, images, music, spoken and written word, with the interactive power of computer and communications technology, computer-enabled consumer devices and most importantly the Internet. New media holds out a possibility of on-demand access to content any time, anywhere, on any digital device, as well as interactive user feedback, creative participation and community formation around the media content. What distinguishes New media from traditional media is not the digitizing of media content into bits, but the dynamic life of the "new media" content and its interactive relationship with the media consumer. This dynamic life, moves, breathes and flows with pulsing excitement in real time. Another important promise of New Media is the "democratization" of the creation, publishing, distribution and consumption of media content.

Most technologies described as "new media" are digital, often having characteristics of being manipulated, networkable, dense, compressible, interactive and impartial. Some examples may be the Internet, websites, computer multimedia, computer games, CD-ROMS, and DVDs. New media is not television programs, feature films, magazines, books, or paper-based publications - unless they contain technologies that enable digital interactivity, such as graphic tags containing web-links.

The definition for image is artifact, for example two-dimensional picture that has a similar experience to some subject. The definition of graphic is visual representation on some surface such as a wall, canvas, computer screen and paper. The definition of text is a combination of alphabets from A-Z in form of words or senteces. The definition of sound is traveling wave that is oscillation of pressure transmitted to a solid, liquid or gas composed of frequencies within the range of hearing and of a level sufficient strong to be heard. Meanwhile, the definition of animation is rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. Other type of artwork that can be produce is new invention. This kind of artworks combines all the elements above to achieve uniqueness. New inventions are a change in the thought process for doing something or the useful application of new inventions or discoveries. It may refer to incremental emergent or radical and revolutionary changes in thinking products, processes or organizations.

Interactivity has become a term for number of new media use options evolving from the rapid dissemination of Internet access point, the digitalization of the media, and media convergence. In 1984, Rice defined the new media as communication technologies that enable or facilitate user-to-user interactivity and interactivity between user and information. Such as Internet replaces the "one-to-many" model of traditional mass communication with the possibility of a "many-to-many" web of communication. Any individual with the appropriate technology can now produce his or her online media and include images, text, and sound about whatever he or she chooses. So the new media with technology convergence shifts the model of mass communication, and radically shapes the ways we interact and communicate with one another. Vin Crosbie(2002) described three communications media in “What is new media?”. He saw Interpersonal media as “one to one”, Mass media as “one to many” and, finally New Media as Individuation Media or “many to many”.

When we think of interactivity and its meaning, we assume that it is only prominent in the conversational dynamics of individuals who are face-to-face. This restriction of opinion does not allow us to see its existence in mediated communication forums. Interactivity is present in some programming work, such as video games. It's also viable in the operation of traditional media. In the mid 1990s, filmmakers started using inexpensive digital cameras to create films. It was also the time when moving image technology had developed, which was able to be viewed on computer desktops in full motion. This development of new media technology was a new method for artists to share their work and interact with the big world. Other settings of interactivity include radio and television talk shows, letters to the editor, listener participation in such programs, and computer and technological programming. Interactive new media has become a true benefit to every one because people can express their artwork in more than one way with the technology that we have today and there is no longer a limit to what we can do with our creativity.

Interactivity can be considered as a central concept in understanding new media, but different media forms possess different degree of interactivity, even some forms of digitized and converged media are not in fact interactive at all. Tony Feldman considers digital satellite television as an example of a new media technology that uses digital compression to dramatically increase the number of television channels that can be delivered, and which changes the nature of what can be offered through the service, but does not transform the experience of television from the user’s point of view, as it lacks a more fully interactive dimension. It remains the case that interactivity is not an inherent characteristic of all new media technologies, unlike digitization and convergence.

As conclusions, new media can brings a lot of advantages to the world in the future. A lot of things can be develop. Plus, with new media, it can make a lot of changes to the human life in simplify the way of completing things. It also will bring goods to humankind in the future.

Week 7

Week 7 : Class Activity

We were told to draw a scary version of cat . Usually when people think of cat's first word that came in their mind is "ADORABLE","CUTE" etc.

What about we give them another word for it which is "SCARY".

So, i try to draw a version of a cat that is like a combination of a gargoyle and a cat.

Imagine if my version of cat wandering and flying around the neighborhood or even the alley.Jeez, it would make people scream run away like hussain bolt in instant.

Week 6 – Analogy

This week also during lecture session we are doing another activity which require us to write a short poem about love base on the image of chili.

CHILI

Concept: Love

owh girl,

u make my heart turn red like chili.

i never feel so complete,

Till u walk into my heart with your lovely smile,

I would never miss you because i,

buried you deep inside my heart, my red hot feeling

will never tired of the way im suppose to love back.

Week 6 – Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition

The definition of Juxtaposition
An act or Instance of placing close together side by side, esp for comparison or contrast

During this week, we having a fun class activity and at the same time learn and understand the meaning of Juxtaposition.

Basically, most of us can define Juxtaposition by combining a another line of word or anything, get them together to generate an ideas, or even develop and for our visualization towards approaching something new.

Well, this week fun activity was about positioning a word that was different meaning put them together in a paper. Then there are steps we must follow and it actually a step to develop those words into another creative dimension by visualizing the 2 words chosen.

class activity Juxtaposition sketch

We were asked to choose two digit numbers and matched two digit numbers with two words from the column below:

1 flower 0 Head
2 lighting 9 Rain
3 ice 8 Wood
4 light 7 Tree
5 fire 6 Spider
6 duck 5 root
7 dog 4 Mountain
8 oil 3 Wind
9 leave 2 Rock
0 fly 1 Water

Step 1

3 pair of number must be chosen from (00-99)

My chosen number was "10","24"and"30".So the number represent:-

  • 10- flower, head
  • 24- lighting ,mountain
  • 30- ice ,head

Step 2

Then we were asked to make a sentence of each chosen words and visualize in a piece of paper.

these are the sentence using the 2 random words:

10: The flower was given by the head boss of the department .

24: The lighting can be seen clearly when we are on top of the mountain.

30: The ice fall on top of his head.

Step 3

Create a new word by combining those two word together.

like shown on the sketch image above

flowerhead

lightingmountain

icehead

Step 4

After Combining those words, we have to create and illustrate the image of "flowerhead","lightingmountain" and " icehead"

like shown on the sketch image above

Finally, it's done.

This is one fun exercise to make our mind to think outside the box with those word. Everything is all just about visualize and think outside the box to get our ideas came to life .

Week 5

Mind map + Mortar and Pestle

During this lecture session, our main focus is on mind mapping towards a problem solving and generate ideas through mind map. A mind map is one of the best solution toward having it as our own problem solving partner .A beautiful constructed mind map is just simple, well detailed and it will keep keep us focus as your creativity ideas keep coming .

Class activity

During class we have a really fun activity,Which is creating a mind map for "Mortar and Pestle for It's usage in the future".

I was told to imagine how people in the future will use mortar and pestle for their own personal usage and how the role of mortar and pestle have been change in the future

I choose to take noise and hair ( how people in the future will apply it's usage towards noise and hair)

NOISE: "MORTAR AND PESTLE AS A NOISE CANCELATION DEVICE"

It will remove noise by put the mortar on a high decibel noisy things, the pestle will capture the noise and apply a wave cancellation towards the noise so that the noise will turn mute.

HAIR: " AS A HAIR DESTROYER"

In the future of the prison world, mortar & pestle will be used as part of the punishment towards inmate who conduct a heavy crime like selling counterfeit beauty product. The mortar will be put on top of their head like a velcro mortar that just capture the hair and the pestle will be use to smash the mortar and as a result, it will destroy and remove their hair and will never grow back forever.

WEEK 4 -Convergent & Divergent Thinking

Convergent
Thinking that brings together information focussed on solving a problem (especially solving problems that have a single correct solution)
Divergent
Thinking that moves away in diverging directions so as to involve a variety of aspects and which sometimes lead to novel ideas and solutions; associated with creativity

Mind map
It is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged radially around a central key word or idea. It is used to generate, visualize. structure and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing.

ASSOCIATED MIND MAP

LOGICAL MINDMAP

This week lecture session, it is all about brainstorming. Brainstorming is all part of the
introduction to get our work done. It is a important leading basis to keep our creativity in a
stronger form of structure. Keep on generate ideas till the end so that we could ended up
with a awesome ideas. An ideas that would made an impact and achievement for ourself.
